Military Families all have a story to tell.  Most of us have lived in numerous locations that we call home whether is it for 6 months or 8 years.  We have many units that are dear to our hearts and locations through out our military times that mean more than just a location.  When I stumbled across this company who specializes in Sterling Silver charms for Military Locations, MOS's and more, I couldn't help but fall in love with it.
(Photo courtesy of Jolene McDowell) is what is SO cool about this jewelry....Made in the USA....Charms fit most bracelets, like Pandora, Chamilla, etc....sold by Military Spouses, mothers, friends....beautifully made and quality that is stood behind!

I Believe...Military Style!

One of my favorite quotes is from Audrey Hepburn.  She says it all so well and all of her "I believe's" are things I believe!

I really wanted to add to her list, so here is my list of I believe's in Military Style!

I believe in Red, White & Blue!
I believe that deployments will happen.
I believe in finding the joy in every moment, the good and the bad!
I believe that as soon as the Soldier departs, something will break, someone will get sick, or a problem will arise.
I believe in being prepared.
I believe that military kids are extremely resilient.
I believe in making "family", not just friends at every duty station.
I believe that PCS orders are only real when they are in writing and have already happened.
I believe in change.
I believe that everyone we meet along our life's journey is there for a reason.
I believe in making the most of where we are and with what we have been given.
I believe that we all need a battle buddy.
I believe in volunteering.
I believe that Soldiers are true Heroes!
"I believe in MIRACLES!" to quote Audrey Hepburn with that last statement!
"I believe love is greater than distance." (added by Jessica Aycock)
"I believe that my soldier (airman, marine or coastie) is making a difference for our country! :-)" (added by Rachel Tringali)

I bet everyone out there have their own "I believe" quotes to add, feel free to add in the comments, and I will add to the list!  Have fun with it!

12 Weeks of Mac N Cheese - Week 8 (Sausage Mac N Cheese)

This week's version of Mac N Cheese came about from the inspiration from our son Andy.  Andy is definitely our Mac N Cheese lover in the house.  He likes it almost every way.  (Buffalo is the ONLY one I have seen him not eat so far, he doesn't like HOT food!)  A few weeks ago he was having Sunday morning breakfast and we were beginning to sit out the things we needed for that week's Mac N Cheese and as Andy ate sausage he kept trying to tell us to add sausage to that week's recipe (see Andy speaks in sign language, so sometimes we don't always understand on first try what he means).  He stayed persistent and we finally realized he liked the sausage he was eating for breakfast so much he wanted it in his mac n cheese too.  Well that week it wasn't going to work with the flavors we had chosen, but we decided to make a special recipe just for Andy.

This one has just the right cheese blends to compliment the sausage perfectly.  One item we did add to this is the Loose Lip Larry's Honey Mustard was a flavor that works with the sausage.  But I do believe you could substitute a brown mustard, or hot sauce and it would work just fine.  It's such a small amount, but it does add a nice flavor to the Mac N Cheese.

  • 16 oz Shell Pasta
  • Pinch of Kosher Salt
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 pinch of onion powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup vegetable broth
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 bayleaf
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp Loose Lip Larry Sweet Georgia Honey Mustard
  • 1/2 cup Asiago Cheese
  • 1 cup Vermont White American Cheese
  • 1 cup Wisconsin Cheddar Cheese
  • 1/2 cup Pecorino Romano Cheese
  • 1 cup Vermont Maple Syrup Sausage (Or your favorite sausage)

1.  Bring 4 quarts of water with a pinch of Kosher salt to a boil.  Add pasta and boil until al dente.

2.  Drain and set aside.  (Keep 1 cup of water from boiling water in case you need it at the end)

3.  Melt 4tbsp of butter in a medium saucepan.
4.  Add flour, onion powder and whisk until blended well.

5.  Add liquid (milk, cream, & vegetable broth) and continue to whisk over a low-medium heat until thickens.

6.  Add nutmeg, bayleaf, salt and LLL Sweet GA Honey Mustard....simmer over low heat, whisking for 8 minutes.

7.  Make sure all your cheeses are grated and ready to add.

8.  Add all cheese and mix.

9.  Add pasta back into saucepan and stir gently together with a rubber spatula.  If this is too thick add a small amount of water saved from boiling noodles....until correct consistency.

10.  Add sausage and stir.
11.  Serve and enjoy!!!

Pretzel Rolls

Have you ever walked into the grocery store looking for the perfect sandwich roll?  My family for years has done just that.  My entire family LOVES a good roll for either a Ham, Turkey & Cheese sandwich, or for a hamburger, or a Roast Beef, etc.  We have been trying numerous roll recipes for the best make at home rolls, because we can never consistently find just the right roll.  Seems like when we do buy ones everyone loves, we can't find them again, or in the town we live in!  This brings me to today's recipe.  We have been trying and adapting many different bread recipes....finding some we really didn't like.  Finding some that are OK, but not perfect yet.  I have to say though, today's recipe after my boys adapted and made it truly their now my favorite we have made so far.  I promise the search for the perfect roll isn't yet up, but this is pretty close to perfect in my opinion.

recipe for pretzel rolls

These Pretzel Rolls are just the right crispness on the outside, but incredibly soft and melt in your mouth on the inside.  We got the whole family involved in making this recipe.  Our youngest has showed an interest in creating in the kitchen with us, so you will see he played a huge part in making these fantastic.  He was so excited when they turned out to be awesome!!!  So let's get to it!!!

Prep Time:  90 mins
Cook Time:  10 mins

  • 1 1/3 cups warm water (110 degrees F)
  • 2 tbsp warm milk
  • 2 1/2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp white sugar
  • 2 quarts water
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1 large egg (scramble in small bowl and set aside)
  • 1/4 cup kosher salt

1.  In the bowl of a standing mixer, mix a 1/3 cup of warm water (105-115 degrees F) with the yeast and let stand until bloomed (foamy).
2.  Once bloomed....(should look something like this....)
3.  Add the remaining cup of warm water along with milk, sugar, & melted butter and swirl to dissolve the sugar.
4.  Add flour & sugar.
5.  Fit your mixer with your dough hook.
6.  Mix on med-low speed until dough forms a nice pliable dough ball. (add flour if needed)
7.  Flour surface and turn dough out onto.  Knead for 2 minutes.
8.  Roll into a 2 foot long log and cut into 12 even pieces.
9.  Form dough into either simple rolls (place a small cross cut in tops of simple rolls), or pretzel shaped rolls.
10.  Cover dough with lightly oiled plastic wrap and let pretzels rest for about 30-40mins.  Time to rise!
11.  Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
12.  Spray 2 baking sheets with cooking spray.
13.  In a large stockpot, bring the cold water to a boil, remove from heat, and add baking soda.  (Do not add baking soda while over will boil over)  You can then return to heat.
14.  Drop two rolls into the boiling water and boil for no more than 30 seconds, turning once.
15.  Carefully remove with slotted spoon and hold above pot and let drain.
16.  Brush on egg over each roll.
17.  Sprinkle lightly with Kosher Salt.  Repeat with remaining rolls.
18.  Arrange rolls on baking sheets and bake on the upper and middle racks of the oven for about 15-20 mins or until browned all over.  Be sure to switch pans during baking every 5 mins for a more even baking experience.  (We turned and changed racks every 5 mins of baking.)

19.  Let rolls cool on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Look at those amazing looking rolls....and they taste even better than they look!  So yummy!

Alex was excited that they turned out so yummy that he wanted to show them off.

We have used this recipe for Hamburger Buns, Sandwich rolls, and even for simple pretzels.  This is so easy and fun to do!

If you enjoyed this, please take a look at a few more of our recipes...
